An ordinary differential equation is derived for the covariance response of multi-degree-of-freedom structural systems with strong nonlinearity. Using the covariance response, the technique is developed for the maximum ductility factor response and the safety or non-exceeding probability o f the structural system. An earthquake ex citation model is presented and non-stationary parameters of the excitation model are determined on the basis of the recorded earthquake accelerogram. Numerical examples are presented and the usefulness of the technique is demonstrated. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
