The simple anisotropic hardening model for the cyclic behavior of soil under earthquake excitations, with special application to granular materials, is proposed. Some numerical results for the response of a sand element are presented in order to demonstrate some features of the proposed model. After discussing an apparent shortcoming of the present model, which are a necessary consequence due to the assumptions used in order to render the model simple enough for the practical use, some fundamental discussions on the constitutive model for soils will be given in order to point out the shortcomings inherent in the elasto-plastic constitutive model for the material of this kind. The alternative formulation of the constitutive model for soils is suggested. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
