STUDY ON REDUCTION OF SEISMIC ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE AGAINST RETAINING STRUCTURES BY STONE-BACKFILL

Analytical and experimental study on reduction of the seismic active earth pressure on retaining structures were performed. The pseudo-static method was introduced into the estimation of the seismic active earth pressure on the wall due to the backfill with a triangular sectional stone-backfill which is constructed adjacent to the back of the wall as a part of the backfill. The dynamic earth pressure tests were performed by using a 55 cm-high counterbalanced movable wall. The analytical solutions agreed with the test results.
