With relation to the amount of earthquake energy fed into structures, an instructive set of mathematical formulas is presented in a novel fashion. The scope of formulations extends far to multi-component inputs of ground shaking as well as to a variety of multi-DOF systems. Upon deleting the separable factor of oscillation mode, a close relationship with the Fourier amplitude spectrum is shown to feature the spectral representation of the available energy in a ground shaking. In particular, the results indicate a new procedure for the time-dependent frequency analysis of multi-dimensional earthquake motions by means of the tensorial expression of the work done upon oscillators. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
