Fundamental mechanical property of bricks, and static horizontal loading test and shaking table test of brick masonry walls which fail in shear are reported. In the static and dynamic tests, six types of wall specimens were tested. Hysteretic restoring characteristics of the brick walls subjected to cyclic horizontal load were investigated in the static loading tests. Maximum shear capacity of the walls, deterioration in load carrying capacity, ductility, change of rigidity for horizontal shear and energy absorbing capacity by hysteresis loops in the inelastic range were analyzed on the basis of the test results. Effect of reinforcements was also discussed. Fundamental material to formulate the hysteretic rules which are applicable to the dynamic response analysis, was obtained. In the shaking table tests under the excitation which simulated 1940 E1 Centre N-S component, dynamic response behavior of brick walls was successfully caught. Dynamic hysteretic behavior was investigated and restoring force characteristics obtained from the shaking table test was compared with that obtained from static test. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
