By accounting properly for the relevant factors, an extensive set of quantitative examinations is made of the capability of extreme ground shakings in causing damage and collapse of R/C buildings. The study is intended to illustrate important trends in the gross mechanics of structural failure and to provide a destructive rating of strong-motion records from the specific point of view. The ensemble of excitations examined in this study covers many of the accelerograms having shown high peak accelerations. This includes impulsive type shakings featured by markedly high amplitude, as well as the more typical records of still longer duration. For purposes of specifying the variations in their fundamental properties, a three-parameter measure in terms of amplitude, duration and frequency content is newly introduced on the basis of the time-and frequency-domain distributions of total oscillational energy. The structural models are based on the previously-developed "equivalent" formulation of the overall behaviour of fully nonlinear R/C buildings. An instance of overall failure is employed as the reference system for response analyses, characterizing it by the restoring force properties ideally ductile up to the ultimate destabilization due to the effects of gravity. Destructive potential of motions derived is then scaled by use of "damage and collapse accelerations", and their differing correlations with the three-parameter measure are emphasized. By comparison with the reference case, the influences of ductility deterioration and localized failure, which can be significant factors to reduce the structural capacity, are also investigated in this presentation. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
