To make clear the response characteristics of deep soil deposits during an earthquake, seismic wave velocity of the deposits to the depth of several kilometers are required. In view of this requirement, we, adopting the down hole method, directly measured the velocity of S and P waves down to the depth of 3510m and 2300m at two sites in the metropolitan area of Japan. S waves were generated by small explosions in subsidiary shallow boreholes and SH-wave generator, generally called the S gun. The experiment revealed that the nedium is fundamentally consisted of three layers. The basement is a pre-Tertiary layer, and two layers on this basement are of the Pleistocene and Miocene. Based on this structure, the response characteristics were computed. The amplification of seismic wave is found remarkably large for long period range. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
