This paper presents the calculation procedure to obtain the yield strength of a buildind structure, which are satified with the condition that the response ductility factors of the members approach to the specified values against a design earthquake. The lumped mass system and the framed system are examined. The procedure consists of the non-linear response spectrum and the equivalent linearization method. The yield strengths of the members can be estimated by use of the method of the square roots of the sum of the square .
