Circumferential higher modes are excited when a large shell structure with a ring foundation is subjected to spatially variant seismic waves. First, we ascertain the response of a ring foundation which rests directly on a semi-infinite elastic medium. The displacement function of the soil is evaluated by the analytical solution of a 3-D wave equation. And on the assumption obtained from the ring analysis, the response of shell is evaluated by the modal method. To analyse the higher modes response, the method, using a pseudostatic displacement which should be calculated from the bottom boundary, is presented. As an example, the response of a cooling tower subjected to an incident seismic wave with a constant velocity is discussed. ƒL[ƒ[ƒhi‰pjF - ‹LŽ–‹æ•ªF - ‹æ•ª @@@ˆÏˆõ‰ï˜_•¶W
