A systematic method for calculating the probability distribution of earthquake response spectrum for aseismic reliability designing is newly proposed, and applied to actual calculations in major Japanese and Chinese cities. Based upon the mathematical theory of the maximum response of single-degree-of-freedom linear system and some empirical equations, this systematic method makes it practically possible to calculate the nonexceedance probability of earthquake response spectrum of a site at a certain lifetime when the surrounding seismicity and the ground condition of this site are given.
